the ironies of life

Move on! Really, how? How do you move on? Living a life the way I have been doing it for the past three decades. Are you kidding me? It’s not possible! I am so used to the comforts, the love, things and the things. Is it all about things? Deep down I know it is possible, anything is possible, that’s what people say. And that’s what I said – wrapped in my thoughts. In a nutshell the quake hit us hard. Thousands dead. One of my relatives lost his 16 year old son buried under the rubbles of Dharara right in front of his eyes. Hundreds of children were orphaned and many children face the risk of being trafficked. Villages were wiped out leaving no signs of life ever existing. And monsoon is right around the corner. I know the fate of many people who have lost their homes will endure greater hardships in the coming months. When people don’t have a roof over their head – they hit rock bottom! I am not writing to complain about the hypocrisy of our donors or our government. We a...

Just a development thought

I have always wondered despite hundreds of development agencies working in Nepal we still haven’t eradicated poverty by half yet. So where did the money go? Or simply, did we use the donations at the right place to meet the right targets or did we simply spend with no outcome. Many large organizations claim their reach (# of population) through their public reports but none tally the figures of their reach which directly affects the national outcome. Something to think about!!!

A question of choice

If you haven’t watched the latest video starring Deepika Padukone declaring her choices, its ok you still have time to catch up. The video has spurred backlashes procuring articles from many female writers and bloggers and fans stating their disappointment. Shoba De the famous Indian writer talked about the confusion – she said she was confused if the video was about women empowerment or was it an advert for an international shampoo brand and the volume it gives to a beautiful woman’s hair just like Deepikas’. One of the fans wrote a letter stating the actress is biased when it comes to women empowerment. I believe the ABC Roast video shows her laughing at lewd jokes passed at someone masturbating to Farida Jalal and Semi Grewal’s dildo but at the same time came out strongly when the Times of India published pictures of her cleavage. Now don’t be so harsh I thought to myself, she is just a pretty girl who has all the right things going for her while at the same time making big b...

Insanely trying to raise a kid

While we drive to and from our designated destinations my five year old girl likes to listen to songs. She particularly likes the rap songs. Now I don’t mind her listening to songs I believe children should listen to music all the time. But come to think of it rap songs are hard to digest. While we wait patiently to cross the traffic light the lyrics burst out ‘I want to spank that big fat ass’. One fine day my daughter hummed ‘spank that ass, spank that ass’ and that was a standalone speech, she didn’t say anything further. I wasn’t appalled. I just didn’t know how to react because she has blurted out many other words that I cannot mention here.   Now, I am not proud of what my daughter blurted out – I am trying. I couldn’t say anything in defense. I waited and I explained to her those words aren’t something she should repeat, not everything we hear has to be repeated. I have also tried erasing or skipping all the rap songs that almost always have profane lyrics. Poor kid sh...

My little girl is graduating kindergarten

ta ta kindergarten Like every other mom, I am paranoia when it comes to making life-changing decisions that concerns my little girl. She is a big girl now she says; I guess she is. She will be graduating kindergarten in a couple of months and my palms are already sweating. I think I am going to cry. I have embraced a wining baton when it comes to uncontrollable emotions.  Okay, I lied. It isn’t so much that her graduation is making me paranoid as much as it is the admissions for grade 1. My husband and I have actually worked it out. We want to admit her in a school that does not force us to go through the general application process. I have seen one of my friends almost go crazy last year – thankfully all turned out well. Am I in for a similar ride? I am already in that vicious cycle; I have not just realized it yet. I snapped out of it today when my colleague asked me why an international school? The first thing I thought was have you seen the lines in front of th...
